Taizhou in East China's Zhejiang province is upgrading public washrooms to look modern in appearance and inner facilities, in an active response to the national "toilet revolution" campaign.

According to the city's plan, public washrooms in the future will be equipped with smart toilets, WiFi and electric sockets to upgrade their functions and transform them into rest places for people.

Over the following three years, Taizhou is going to build a batch of washrooms in urban areas, especially at tourist centers. "We aim to make them an attraction in the city as well as platforms for tourists to relax," said a government official.

In detail, the government agencies will infuse the cultural elements of the city into the design of public washrooms and adopt environmentally friendly materials. Professional teams will be entrusted to supervise the daily operation of the facilities as well.

Taizhou is home to an industrial cluster of over 100 companies specializing in producing smart toilets. The annual output of the city's toilet industry accounts for more than 50 percent of the entire country's total. The prosperous industry is a strong backup for Taizhou's "toilet revolution".
