China Academy of Art celebrates 90th anniversary

(ezhejiang.gov.cn) Updated : 2018-04-12

During the summit, the wives of the G20 leaders attended an exhibition arranged by CAA and appreciated time-honored Chinese arts such as ink paintings and calligraphy. They also tried their hands at writing Chinese characters with brush pens.

In addition to the Asian Games and G20 Hangzhou Summit, the academy has also hosted a number of art festivals in recent years, including the Hangzhou Chinese Painting Biennale, Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art and the West Lake International Documentary Festival.

CAA is now exploring ways to integrate its own development with that of Zhejiang province. Photography, sculpture, painting and calligraphy artworks created by CAA's faculty and students are displayed at subway stations to convey healthy social values.

Since 2010, the academy has put forward a series of plans to beautify rural areas and improve public services across the province, hoping to facilitate the coordinated development of both rural and urban areas. The academy's faculty and students are contributing to village planning, brand building and environmental improvement.

CAA's art is also a driving force behind industrial development. Entrusted by the Zhejiang government, the Design Intelligence Award (DIA), which is hosted by CAA and the China Industrial Design Association, has become a global competition integrating art, technology and commerce. The award was launched to propel the transformation and upgrading of industries in Zhejiang.

The international award stimulates creativity at local universities, enterprises and research institutes and urges them to cooperate in cultivating designers and increasing the global presence of "Made in Zhejiang", according to Xu Jiang, head of CAA.

Today, DIA is recognized worldwide, with its contestants coming from 52 countries and regions spanning five continents. CAA is also becoming more influential throughout the world. CAA believes that becoming a world-class academy requires not only the further development of its disciplines, but also closer ties with the outside world.
