Mayors and top officials from 30 cities in the Yangtze River Delta attended the 18th Mayor Joint Session of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Economic Coordination Committee in Quzhou, Zhejiang province on April 12 and 13 to discuss how to promote the development of the delta region.

The Yangtze River Delta is a world-class urban center. Although the land area of the delta region takes up only 3.8 percent of the country, its GDP amounted to 19.5 trillion yuan ($3.08 trillion) last year, roughly 25 percent of the national total.

The meeting, with a theme of "constructing a great garden and entering a new era to build a green and beautiful Yangtze River Delta", had great significance considering the current rapid pace of the regional integration.

On Jan 12, government leaders from the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui and the city of Shanghai met and held discussions on the joint development of the region in Suzhou, Jiangsu. A joint administrative office for the Yangtze River Delta was established in March. Later, the three provinces and Shanghai will release a three-year plan for the integration, along with a series of in-depth cooperation programs.

This time, approximately 300 officials from 30 cities including Hangzhou, Nanjing, Hefei, Suzhou and Ningbo gathered to discuss how to speed up integration of resources, take advantage of each other's strengths, deal with difficult challenges, and promote coordinated development.

They signed a cooperation agreement at the meeting, which specified the main tasks for the year. The 30 member cities also jointly published an initiative on building a civilized and beautiful big garden in the delta region.

Quzhou, host to the meeting, is a historical and culturally profound city in west Zhejiang and a place of residence for Confucius' descendants. It joined the Yangtze River Delta Urban Economic Coordination Committee in 2010 and has been working hard to promote the region's integrated development over the past several years by taking steps like building a modern transportation system and facilitating ecological tourism.
