A photo exhibition showcasing the life of Chinese cultural giant Lu Xun and his hometown of Shaoxing, Zhejiang province opened in Trier, Germany on Sept 1.

The exhibition, which will last one month, is part of a series of cultural exhibits in the birthplace of Karl Marx to mark the 200th birthday of the philosopher. It will highlight Lu's contribution to both literature and Sino-German exchanges, as well as displaying photos of his Zhejiang hometown.

Organizers plan to stage discussions about his work and host opera performances by Shaoxing artists.

Hu Sishe, vice-president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said in his opening speech that in addition to commemorating Marx, the exhibition provides a window through which the outside world can learn more about China and the country's changes over the past decades.

Wei Wei, chairman of the Shaoxing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, noted that Lu translated the works of seven German writers into Chinese. He hoped the exhibition would help increase cultural exchanges between China and Germany.

Performers from Shaoxing presented traditional operas, folk music and dances at the opening ceremony, which drew warm cheers and applause from the 200 attendees.
