Five hundred kilograms of fresh waxberries from Wencheng county in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, set off on a journey to Canada on June 12.

Zhou Zuorong, owner of a local agriculture enterprise, had a good harvest of the fruit this year and is ambitious to further expand his business' presence in the Canadian market.

"We plan to export 20,000 kilograms of waxberries overseas this year," said Wu Changwang, an official from Wencheng's department of agriculture and rural affairs, explaining that every kilogram will generate 30 yuan ($4.34) in profits for local enterprises.

The waxberry plantation in Wencheng is a pillar sector of the county's agriculture. Since last year, a smart system has been applied at the orchards, enabling farmers and potential buyers to monitor the plantation process. QR codes on the boxes allow customers to trace the origin of the fruit.

To promote the development of waxberry plantation and sales, and to enlarge the influence of the product globally, Wencheng has been striving to build up a "Wencheng Waxberry" brand in recent years.

Currently, the total area of waxberry plantations in Wencheng exceeds 39 square kilometers. This year's output of local waxberries is expected to reach 25,000 metric tons, according to a government official.
