Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has been helping to develop the computing industry in Zhejiang province in recent years using its latest Kunpeng processors.

The company has cooperated with the provincial government of Zhejiang to build a Kunpeng innovation center, which was recently launched in Hangzhou High-Tech Zone in Binjiang district, Hangzhou. The Binjiang Institute of Zhejiang University was also launched as the official operator of the center.

Analysts said Zhejiang's booming digital economy is an important reason why Huawei decided to develop the Kunpeng computing industry in Zhejiang.

In Binjiang district, the added value of core digital industries reached 120.16 billion yuan ($16.81 billion) in 2019, up 16.5 percent year-on-year and accounting for 75.5 percent of the regional GDP.

In addition, Zhejiang's No 1 Project for developing digital economy, the At Most One Visit reform for streamlining administrative procedures, and the City Brain intelligent urban management system have laid a solid foundation for the Kunpeng computing industry.

The 5G era also presented an opportunity for Zhejiang to develop its digital economy. The province plans to build 80,000 5G base stations by 2022.

The provincial government of Zhejiang also signed an agreement with Huawei last November to establish an industrial alliance for developing the Kunpeng computing industry in Zhejiang. The alliance now has 115 members, including Zhejiang Lab.
