China Celadon Town sees synergy in industry and tourism

Shangyang town in Longquan, a county-level city in Lishui, East China's Zhejiang province, is the most concentrated modern Longquan celadon production area in China.

Longquan government began the development of Shangyang town as a characteristic celadon town in 2015, and in 2016, it was listed in the first batch of China's characteristic towns.

In recent years, relying on China Celadon Town, Shangyang has gained popularity, and achieved the synergetic development of the celadon and tourism sectors.

Due to the development of Shangyang town, many local people who had sought business opportunities outside the town have decided to return home to develop businesses in Shangyang.

Gong Zuoli and his wife are a post-85 couple came back to Shangyang and opened a celadon factory. "With the increasing popularity of the town, more and more people are becoming interested in Longquan celadon, and our works can be seen more directly and quickly," Gong said.

There are now more than 1,000 locals directly engaged in the celadon industry in Shangyang, and more than 600 engaged in celadon shop management, celadon packaging and other support jobs.

With the development and expansion of the celadon industry, the town's tourism sector has been making new breakthroughs. Many local villagers have turned to homestay businesses.

Currently, the town has 40 homestays. In 2019, the homestays received 228,000 tourists and generated income of 14.43 million yuan ($2.06 million).
