Statistics show that 60 percent of consumption in China occurs at night and more than half of the turnover of the country's large shopping centers is generated between 6 pm and 10 pm.

Zhejiang recently published the country's first provincial-level comprehensive report on nighttime economy. The report was jointly compiled by the School of Management at Zhejiang University, the Zhejiang branch of State Grid, and a number of internet companies based on big data regarding power consumption and online sales recorded throughout the entire province between January 2019 and July 2020.

Among the 11 prefecture-level cities in the province, Hangzhou led the way in nighttime economy, with a market activity index of 43.6. Ningbo and Shaoxing came in second and third, with nighttime market activity indexes of 36.7 and 32.6 respectively.

Among the 90 counties, county-level cities, and districts in the province, Jianggan district in Hangzhou ranked first for its vibrant nighttime economy. The district boasts a famous LED light show along the Qiantang River, a number of popular night markets, as well as numerous well-known live houses and performing arts venues.

According to the report, Zhejiang's nighttime economy saw a V-shaped trajectory over the first seven months of this year. The nighttime economic index for the province in general plummeted by 80.6 percent year-on-year in February due to the coronavirus outbreak and started to rebound in March as the spread of the coronavirus slowed down. By July, the province's nighttime economy had returned to the level of the previous year.
