Jiaxing Port in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, ranked 91st among the top 100 container ports in the world, five position higher than in 2019, the first year it was included on the list, local media reported on Jan 13.

In 2020, Jiaxing Port experienced a 7.34 percent year-on-year increase in cargo throughput to 117 million metric tons, including 1.96 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

In December of last year, both cargo and container throughput at Jiaxing Port maintained double-digit increases.

The increased activity at the port was largely attributable to the rapid recovery of foreign trade in China, bringing a large number of export orders to foreign trade companies in central China, as well as new sea-river combined transportation stations.

The number of containers delivered at Jiaxing Port via sea-river combined transportation saw a stable increase last year as the port has been encouraging foreign trade companies to export products by water instead of land, and the port's Zhapu port area has expanded its transition from bulk transportation to container transportation.

Jiaxing also invested 3.71 billion yuan ($571.46 million) into the construction of waterway facilities in 2020, 2.5 percent more than the intended annual investment.

Last year, three 10,000-ton berths at Jiaxing Port were completed, and construction of a container water channel and wharf for storing and transporting liquefied natural gas commenced.

Jiaxing Port aims to become a top-notch port in China offering sea-river combined transportation by 2025, according to a worker at Jiaxing port and shipping management and service center.
