Zhejiang lawmakers, political advisors discuss scientific innovation

Scientific innovation was a prominent topic among NPC deputies and CPPCC National Committee members from East China's Zhejiang province during media interviews at last week's annual sessions of the national legislature and the top political advisory body.

Ding Lieming, an NPC deputy and chairman of the Hangzhou-based Betta Pharmaceuticals Co, said:"The Government Work Report proposes prompting talented people to innovate more and reflects the government's priorities in this regard.”

A top Chinese expert in innovative drugs, Ding has been invited by local authorities in Zhejiang to attend numerous high-end talent recruitment activities over the past year. Many medical researchers have shown great interest in working in Zhejiang as the province advances its goal of becoming a hub for the biomedicine industry, Ding said.

Shi Yigong, a CPPC National Committee member and president of Hangzhou-based Westlake University, was inspired by the statement in the Government Work Report that China would accelerate the development of scientific research institutes to serve national strategies and construct more national-level laboratories.

"Zhejiang has directed Zhejiang University, Westlake University, and some other institutes to serve national scientific strategies," Shi said. "Construction on the first four provincial-level laboratories, including Westlake Laboratory, is now underway."

Wang Jianyi, a CPPC National Committee member and chairman of Futong Group, told reporters that he agreed with the Government Work Report's  assertion that enterprises are the most importance force for innovation. Wang praised the country's enhanced policy support for businesses engaged in R&D.
