A group of protected glossy ibises has been recorded in the wetlands of Putuo Mountain in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, marking the first confirmed sighting of the species in the area.

Often referred to as the "panda of birds" due to their rarity, they were seen foraging and resting in shallow waters. With long legs and iridescent feathers that reflect metallic hues in the sunlight, the species is considered a key indicator of wetland ecosystem health.

Classified as a first-class protected species in China, the glossy ibis was once declared locally extinct, making this sighting particularly significant. The appearance of the species reflects improving ecological conditions in the region.

In recent years, local authorities have strengthened environmental protection through integrated ecological protection systems. Efforts include coordinated patrol mechanisms, wildlife rescue support, and expanded community participation in conservation activities.

Public awareness campaigns and incentive programs have also been introduced to encourage residents to protect natural habitats.
