Shengsi county in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, recorded its highest-ever mussel export volume and value for the January-May period this year, with overseas demand continuing to expand across global markets.

The county exported 3,559.3 metric tons of mussels in the first five months of the year, generating about $7.2 million in export value. The figures represent year-on-year increases of 15.03 percent and 30.14 percent, respectively, both reaching record highs for the same period.

Local processor Huali Aquatic Products, based on Gouqi Island, has entered into the Chilean market, further extending its export network, which already covers more than 20 countries and regions. Yu Xiangming, a representative of the company, said export orders have been secured through the second half of the year following investments in automated production lines and international quality certifications.

Shengsi's mussel industry has maintained strong export momentum in recent years, with annual export value exceeding 100 million yuan ($14.76 million) for four consecutive years from 2022 to 2025.

Industry growth has been supported by coordinated efforts from local authorities. Shengsi Customs has helped exporters improve production standards, upgrade facilities, and obtain overseas market registration approvals. A local testing laboratory has also been established to strengthen quality control while reducing operating costs.
