Construction on a $1 billion hydrogen energy project began in Haiyan, a county in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province on June 9 as part of the 22nd China Zhejiang Investment and Trade Symposium held in Ningbo, Zhejiang, Jiaxing Daily reported.

The project was funded by Air Products and Chemicals Inc, one of the largest hydrogen and liquid hydrogen producers in the world.

The project includes hydrogen energy preparation and packaging, manufacturing of parts for key equipment in the hydrogen industry, and demonstration city construction for hydrogen energy utilization.

"The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region is not only our most important source of raw materials, but also a significant market for us," said Fengyan, vice-president of Air Products in China, at the groundbreaking ceremony, adding that since Haiyan is located in the core area of the YRD region, its investment is of great importance to the company's future development.

Jiaxing is a pilot city in Zhejiang in hydrogen technology innovation and industrialization, and Air Products will help it form a complete hydrogen industry layout which includes hydrogen production, storage, transportation, hydrogen refueling station, hydrogen fuel cell system and hydrogen vehicles, according to a senior official from the Jiaxing Municipal Government.

He said that the hydrogen industry in Jiaxing is expected to generate more than 30 billion yuan in output value by 2025, and the city will grow into a hydrogen industry base with international influence.
