The "Blue Recycle" campaign launched by Taizhou authorities to tackle marine solid waste earlier this year has been bearing fruits.

For the campaign, 17 "Little Blue Houses" - facilities designed to collect marine plastic wastes - have been set up in six counties and districts in Taizhou.

Since April, these facilities have collected 3,137 metric tons of marine garbage, including 1,745 tons of plastic garbage (270,000 plastic bottles), reducing carbon emissions by about 2,269 tons.

Residents near the shore have also been mobilized to join the campaign. They can earn about 200 yuan ($30.77) per day for collecting plastic bottles, according to Qiu Pufa, head of a Little Blue House located in Jiaojiang district.

Taizhou has also set up a fund worth 3 million yuan to pay the basic social insurance of low-income residents involved, as well as introduced an initiative that allows fishermen to exchange plastic bottles and fishing nets for daily necessities.

The recycled waste will be processed into goods such as mobile phone cases and beverage bottles, according to an official at the Taizhou municipal bureau of ecology and environment.

As of the end of June, more than 20 enterprises, non-profitable environmental protection organizations and universities had gotten involved in the "Blue Recycle" campaign.

Plastic waste such as fishing nets and plastic bags and bottles accounts for up to 80 percent of marine debris in China, official statistics show.
