Food's vital role in advancing urban sustainability was the highlight of the 2026 Roundtable on Gastronomy Creativity and Urban Sustainable Development, held in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, on June 14.

The event brought together representatives from the consulates of Malaysia, Argentina, and Chile in Shanghai, delegates from China's UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy, industry experts, and local practitioners.

Centered on the theme "Connecting Cities, Culture and the Future Through Cuisine", the session featured discussions on how food can help preserve cultural heritage, engage local communities, drive green growth, and fuel industrial innovation.

International guests shared perspectives on food as a bridge across cultures. Speakers from Argentina, Malaysia, and Chile noted that culinary traditions embody local cultural identities, bring communities together, and spark creative inspiration.

Chinese cities also showcased their extensive experience in advancing sustainable gastronomy, including heritage conservation, culinary education, integrated tourism development, and the formulation of industry standards.

As the host, Taizhou presented its unique practices. The city has integrated sustainable agriculture, culinary education, and seasonal local ingredients to build a balanced, sustainable development system centered on food culture.
