The modern Taizhou Luantan opera My Dachen Island was staged at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing on July 4, marking the second time the Taizhou Luantan Troupe has performed this production at the venue.

Originally staged at the theater in May 2021, the newly refined production revisits the story of pioneers who settled in and developed Dachen Island 70 years ago through traditional Taizhou Luantan melodies and contemporary stage presentation.

The latest version features further improvements in character development, vocal design, and overall staging. The story of young pioneers building a new home on a once-barren island moved audiences, with many responding through prolonged applause after each scene.

Audience member Zhang Leying, who watched the production for the second time, said the actors' portrayals had become more nuanced and the stage presentation more polished after five years of refinement.

Following the Beijing performance, the Taizhou Luantan Troupe will return to Dachen Island to present the play for local residents and visitors.
