Geely Powertrain Manufacturing Headquarters moves to Yiwu

Geely Powertrain Manufacturing Headquarters started operations in Yiwu, Zhejiang province, on May 17, marking the transformation of the Yiwu base from manufacturing to both research and development (R&D) and manufacturing.

The headquarters, moving from other places to Yiwu, is multifunctional, integrating production, design refinement, optimization of supply chain, quality control, after-sales service, and R&D of products.

The arrival of the headquarters will bring in over 500 talented personnel with bachelor’s degrees and above, and will attract over 100 high-end auto manufacturing and auto parts enterprises to come to Yiwu for exchange and cooperation.

The heads of a local economic and technological development zone said that the arrival of the headquarters will make great contributions to Yiwu’s talent attraction, and Geely’s Yiwu base will become the core part of Geely’s powertrain sector.

Geely signed a deal with Yiwu government in June 2015 to invest 30 billion yuan ($4.35 billion) to build a town for the R&D and production of new energy vehicles, powertrains, auto parts, and other auto-related products. The town is also active in industrial tourism, auto-themed tourism, and leisure and sports entertainment.

Several projects such as the Fengrui engine project, Yili powertrain projects, and a Volvo engine project have settled in the town, and are worth 35 billion yuan. Once all the projects are put into production, the town will become the world's largest auto engine production base.

Many Yiwu's firsts have been created in the town, including the first Yiwu-made auto engine, the first industrial project with investment of over 10 billion yuan (Volvo’s engine project), and the Yiwu-made new energy vehicle.
