Quzhou in Zhejiang province marks Start of Spring, the first of China's 24 solar terms, with "Jiuhua's Start of Spring Ceremony", a millennia-old tradition rooted in Jiuhua township's Miaoyuan village.
Start of Spring, or li chun, begins this year on Feb 4, bringing a promise of renewal and marking the start of a new season.
Villagers gather at the Wutong Ancestral Temple to celebrate the arrival of spring with traditional rituals. These rituals include whipping cattle, which symbolizes the start of spring plowing, and worshipping Goumang, the God of Spring in ancient Chinese mythology, praying for favorable weather and abundant harvests.
