Liu Meiyuan, a representative of the Children of the Doolittle Raiders, and her relatives visited Jiangshan, a county-level city in Quzhou, Zhejiang province, on Oct 17. They toured the Liao family's ancestral home and learned about the rescue of US airman Charles J. Ozuk during World War II.

On April 18, 1942, 16 US B-25 bombers led by US Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle struck targets in Japan. Fifteen aircraft came down in or off China, while the remaining plane landed in the Soviet Union.

Ozuk, navigator of the raid's No 3 aircraft, bailed out over China and landed by parachute on a mountain near the Liao family's ancestral home. Local residents helped him after he was injured, and Liao Shiyuan carried him to his own home, where Ozuk recovered for several days. He was later taken to Jiangshan's urban area before eventually traveling to Chongqing and leaving China.

At the ancestral home in Longtoudian village, Zhangcun township, Liu Dingyuan, Liu Meiyuan's brother and a member of the Children of the Doolittle Raiders, joined Liao Jinyong, grandson of Liao Shiyuan, and local researchers on the Doolittle Raid Rescue in recalling the rescue.

Liu Dingyuan said visiting the site helped him better understand the courage of those who had helped the airman and China's contribution to the global fight against fascism.
