Jiaxing native Shen Zengzhi (1850-1922) was a renowned scholar, poet, and calligrapher who assumed office during the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Shen once visited Japan to learn about the country's educational system. He also advocated and supported constitutional reform.
