A China-South Korea folk art exchange event was held in Shengfeng village, Xiuzhou district, Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, on April 22, bringing together artists and collectors to promote cross-border collaboration and rural cultural development.
Centered on Xiuzhou farmers' paintings, the event featured exhibitions, creative discussions, and cultural exchanges to connect artistic resources and expand cooperation channels.
A joint exhibition of contemporary folk paintings from China and South Korea displayed works from the Gwangju Minhwa Association alongside local farmer paintings, offering visitors a direct comparison of artistic styles rooted in daily life and traditional craftsmanship.
The South Korean works depicted local customs and urban life, while the Xiuzhou paintings combined traditional themes with modern composition and vivid colors, reflecting evolving rural aesthetics.
Prior to the event, a Xiuzhou farmer painting exhibition had opened in Hampyeong County, South Korea, showcasing 30 works featuring water town scenes and daily life, which drew positive responses from local audiences.
Market activity was also evident, with 11 paintings sold for a total of 66,000 yuan ($9,663). In recent years, Xiuzhou has expanded its farmer painting sector into exhibition, sales, and cultural tourism.
Local teams have explored ways of integrating traditional folk art with contemporary expression, with selected works presented at Art Basel Hong Kong and acquired by international collectors.
