A Zhejiang University-Changshan joint research center has developed more than 40 products, including camellia flower cider, camellia-based cosmetics, and tea saponin laundry pods made from oil-extraction residue, as part of efforts to expand the value chain of Changshan county's oil-tea camellia industry.

Located in Quzhou, Zhejiang province, Changshan county is home to 20,000 hectares of oil-tea camellia plantations, accounting for about 12 percent of the province's total. Like many oil-tea camellia-producing areas, the county's industry had long relied on a traditional model of harvesting seeds, pressing them into oil, and selling the oil, leaving limited room for value-added development.

Established in 2023 by Zhejiang University and Changshan, the Zhejiang University-Changshan Oil-tea Camellia Industry Joint Research Center is exploring new uses for flowers, seed shells, and oil-extraction residues.

By the end of 2025, Changshan's oil-tea camellia industry chain had reached a total output value of 2.1 billion yuan ($311.34 million).

Researchers have analyzed oil-tea camellia and identified four new components, which have been patented.

The center has developed products ranging from health foods and beverages to cosmetics and personal care products, while exploring higher-value applications for camellia-derived ingredients.

The center also serves as a platform that bridges scientific research and commercial application. Through cooperation among universities, companies, and local authorities, Changshan is extending its industrial chain, allowing farmers and village collectives to share more of the added value generated by the sector.
