Shaoxing's textile industry is a traditional, pillar industry that is important to people's livelihoods. Shaoxing has formed a relatively complete industrial chain covering upstream PTA, polyester, spinning, mid-stream weaving, dyeing and finishing, and downstream clothing and home textiles. The city has professional textile markets represented by China Textile City and Qianqing textile raw material market, and a public service platform represented by the Jiangnan branch of the China Textile Academy and Zhejiang Institute of Modern Textile Industry. It has become the most complete and characteristic textile industry cluster in China.

There are nearly 70,000 large and small textile enterprises and domestic industrial units in the city, among which there are 1,862 textile enterprises above the designated scale – annual sales revenue surpassing 20 million yuan ($2.85 million) – with 255,500 employees, accounting for 40.6 and 39 percent of the industries above designated scale in Shaoxing.

In 2018, the Shaoxing textile industry's output value reached 191.85 billion yuan, accounting for 28.2 percent of the city's industries above the designated scale, about 22 percent of the whole province, and about five percent of the whole country. The annual output of enterprises above the designated scale is 3.63 million tons of chemical fiber, 1.6 billion meters of cloth, 16.4 billion meters of printing and dyeing cloth, 130 million pieces of clothing, 130 million ties and 6.33 billion pairs of socks, ranking among the top in China.

Shaoxing is the world's most important production base for ties and socks, the largest production base for chemical fiber fabrics, printing and dyeing processing in Asia.

In Shaoxing, there is one enterprise with sales of over 10 billion yuan (Zhejiang Tiansheng Holding Group) four with sales of over five billion yuan (Zhejiang Jiabao New Fiber Group, Zhejiang Guxiandao New Material, Zhenjiang South Holding Group and Yongli Group), and eight listed enterprises including China Textile City and Zhejiang Furun Dyeing & Printing.
