Shaoxing in East China's Zhejiang province is expected to see its population increase to at least 5.8 million by 2025, local media reported on Nov 24.

According to the municipal development and reform bureau, over 75 percent of the residents are expected to live in urban areas.

The average life expectancy of Shaoxing residents should reach 83 years, said Tao Huijia, a staff member of the bureau.

The bureau has also announced a three-year plan to increase the happiness of locals and to attract foreign talents.

In May, the Shaoxing statistics bureau released the results of the seventh census conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2020.

According to the census, the city's permanent population over the past 10 years has grown by 7.3 percent from 4.91 million to 5.27 million, with an annual average growth rate of 0.71 percent.
