The 5 millionth NEV — a Denza N7 SUV — has rolled off the production line of Chinese new energy vehicle maker BYD, making it the first automaker in the world to reach the milestone.

Behind this remarkable feat lies a close connection to Shaoxing, a city known for its manufacturing prowess.

Wang Chuanfu, founder and chairman of BYD, once said "Zhejiang's investment environment is excellent, especially in Shaoxing." Construction on the second phase of the BYD Shengzhou New Energy Power Battery Production Base is now in full swing.

Shengzhou county-level city in Shaoxing is home to the BYD New Energy Power Battery Production Base. The first phase of the project, from contract signing to production line operation, was completed in a mere 285 days.

Shaoxing is one of the first cities to be included in national demonstration and promotion efforts for new energy vehicles. This has enabled the city to thrive in the development of new energy vehicles.

The city has established four major emerging industry platforms for integrated circuits, biopharmaceuticals, advanced polymer materials, and intelligent vision technology. This strategic shift towards high-end, intelligent, and eco-friendly manufacturing has attracted numerous significant projects to the region.

During the first half of 2023, Shaoxing's GDP reached 362.2 billion yuan ($49.44 billion), a year-on-year growth of 7.9 percent, making it the second-fastest growing city in Zhejiang province.
