The new wing of Shaoxing Museum opened for trial operations on Feb 9 after years of preparation.
The museum, located at the northern foot of Meishan Hill in Jinghu New Area, Yuecheng district, spans approximately 29,500 square meters. Its architectural design draws inspiration from the silhouette of Kuaiji Mountain, with the roof echoing the mountain's form and the walls referencing remnants of the ancient city ramparts, blending tradition with modernity. The museum serves as a comprehensive cultural space integrating collections, research, exhibitions, education, and cultural exchange.
The permanent exhibition on the culture and history of Shaoxing features more than 4,000 artifacts across seven galleries, systematically presenting the natural and cultural history of Shaoxing, with nearly half of the items on display for the first time.
The museum also houses two special exhibition halls: the Painting and Calligraphy Hall, which features 84 works from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the present, including 10 first-grade cultural relics, and the Bronze Mirror Hall, which traces the evolution and craftsmanship of bronze mirrors in the region.
The museum has also established a digital exhibition hall that uses digital technology to curate 400 cultural relics related to Shaoxing heritage from 22 museums worldwide.
"Celebrating Chinese New Year at the Museum" events, featuring six themed interactive activities to enrich the Spring Festival experience, have also been launched to coincide with the new wing's opening.
