How far is a scientific discovery in the laboratory from becoming real productivity that drives industry? In Yuecheng district, Shaoxing, Shaoxin Laboratory is answering with a full-chain innovation path that runs from source innovation through pilot-scale transformation to industrial application.

At the Yangtze River Delta Next-Generation Computing and Memory Chip Pilot and Application Demonstration Base led by Shaoxin Lab, first-phase cleanroom construction has been completed and equipment procurement is in full swing, with commissioning expected before the end of the year.

The second phase, based on a total investment of 900 million yuan ($134.94 million), is also on the agenda, with civil works expected within the year. In the future, a 2,400-square-meter high-standard semiconductor cleanroom will be built, equipped with core processing tools including production lithography machines and atomic layer etching equipment.

To bridge the gap between research and industry, the lab — jointly built by Yuecheng district and Fudan University in 2024 — has adopted a dual-driven model combining pioneering research with industrial transformation, focusing on frontier tracks such as two-dimensional semiconductors, compute-in-memory, and next-generation memory.

Source innovation is the starting point of this chain. Shaoxin Lab has so far incubated six landmark achievements, published 50 papers in top journals such as Nature and Science, and filed 47 invention patents.

Once completed, the project will build the country's only professional service platform capable of providing two-dimensional semiconductor chip tape-out and testing validation, filling a gap in industrial services in the field.
