1470647658213097270.jpgWang Guowei (1877-1927), courtesy name Jing’an and Baiyu, referred to himself as Guantang in his later years (one of the four outstanding Oracle Scholars) and got the posthumous title of Zhongque ( "Being Loyal and Honest" ). As a native of Haining, Zhejiang, he was a master of Chinese studies. He was also one of the “Four Great Tutors” in the Institute of Chinese Studies attached to Tsinghua University, along with Liang Qichao, Chen Yinke, and Zhao Yuanren. He was a master of both Chinese and Western aesthetics. He had numerous great works and made brilliant accomplishments in such fields as literature, aesthetics, history, philosophy, epigraphy, oracle, archeology, etc. Wang was also versed in English, German and Japanese, which made him distinctive in studying Chinese traditional operas in Song (420-479) and Yuan (1271-1368) Dynasties. Meanwhile, Wang was considered the first scholar in China to criticize old Chinese literature with western literary theories, and he had abundant works in these fields.
