Editor's note: Zhejiang Ocean University (ZJOU) in Zhoushan is attended by nearly 300 international students each year. These international students have witnessed the development of Zhoushan and play an important role in promoting Zhoushan culture to the rest of the world.

Tian You, an international student from Indonesia attending ZJOU, has been fascinated by Chinese culture ever since he was a child.

Tian started learning Chinese from the age of 14 and now he can speak Chinese fluently and even recite Chinese poems.

Tian said that he is part-Chinese, with a grandfather from China who always talked about going back and seeking his roots there. As a result, Tian decided to use study in China as another way to fulfill his grandfather's unfulfilled wish.

Tian is quite helpful. He usually gives a hand to international students who are not able to speak Chinese and also helped out local police officers to crack a criminal case involving Indonesians.

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic outbreak worldwide, Tian was not able to come back to ZJOU, but he still keeps up with his studies through online classes.

"I hope that the epidemic will be over as soon as possible, so I can come back to my dear school really soon," Tian said.
