Zhejiang is the birthplace of the Communist Party of China and the "Red Boat Spirit". In 1921, the first CPC National Congress was successfully held on a small boat on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing, signifying the birth of the Communist Party of China.

Zhejiang was a pioneer in China's reform and opening-up. It carried out market-oriented reform more than 40 years ago, one of the first provinces in China to do so. Over the years, its private economy has achieved leapfrog growth in scale and strength, nurturing a great number of successful enterprises.

Since the reform and opening-up drive four decades ago, Zhejiang has embarked on a fast track of economic growth. The province saw its gross domestic product (GDP) grow 3.6 percent year-on-year to more than 6.46 trillion yuan ($1 trillion) in 2020. Its actual utilization of foreign investment reached $15.8 billion last year, an increase of 16.4 percent over 2019. The sense of fulfillment, happiness and security among Zhejiang people has grown continuously.
