The airport's existing 800-meter runway will be extended to 1,800 meters and be equipped with a two-way instrument landing system and a precision approach lighting system. It is expected to be completed and put into use by the end of 2022. The project will cost 2.1 billion yuan ($329.61 million).

After the completion of the project, Dongyang Hengdian Airport will focus on building the first batch of characteristic business jet airports in China. In the future, it will focus on business jet operation and tourist charter flights.

The Dongyang Hengdian Airport is the first town-level airport in China. It officially began operating in March 2018 and has successively introduced 50 aircraft from nearly 20 general aviation companies. It carries out general aviation operations such as aviation emergency rescue, medical rescue, aviation forest protection, short-distance transportation and flight training.
