The arrival of wild macaques has turned a remote village in East China's Zhejiang province into a popular tourism destination.

Situated in the core area of the Xianju National Park, Danzhu village has in recent years been teeming with tourists eager to get a glimpse of macaques.

The macaques have been flocking to Danzhu every year around the Spring Festival period due to the village's ideal ecological environment, according to local villagers.

In 2018, a team composed of volunteers from the Xianju Wildlife Protection Association and Party members in the village was established to protect these creatures. The village has also designated a specific spot for feeding the macaques.

These efforts have borne fruit as thousands of tourists would visit the village, in turn generating a handsome revenue for the locals.

Videos of these macaques have also helped promote the Danzhu township, which is in charge of the Danzhu village.

Situated in the core area of the national 5A Shenxianju Scenic Spot, the township has a forest coverage ratio of 91.3 percent. It has also been honored as a national key rural tourism destination.

The township currently has no fewer than 220 hotels and homestays, and can accommodate more than 20,000 visitors on a daily basis.

To deal with the influx of visitors, which may pose a threat to Danzhu's environment, local authorities adopted a "green currency" system in 2015 to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle among visitors and residents.

The green currency is an incentive used to award people who lead a low-carbon green lifestyle. The currency can be traded for goods or cash.
