The United Nations Global Geographic Information Knowledge and Innovation Center was set up in Deqing county, Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province on May 20.

The center, which is affiliated to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, is the first organization directly under the United Nations Secretariat in China.

The new organization will seek to improve developing countries' geographic information management capabilities, help the international community leverage geographic information technologies to address challenges related to natural resources, climate change, and public health security, and implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Ni Han, vice president of the Zhejiang Beidou Application Industry Association, noted that the center's establishment will also boost the development of the geographical information industry in Huzhou and Zhejiang.

In November 2018, the Moganshan Declaration released at the first United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress expressed support for Deqing's establishment of a United Nations agency to facilitate cooperation and exchange in the field of geographic information.

In August 2019, the United Nations passed a resolution related to accelerating the establishment of a global geographic information knowledge and innovation center in Deqing at the ninth meeting of the Committee of Experts on Global Geographic Information Management.

Deqing is home to a provincial geographical information industrial park, which currently has 400-plus enterprises that generate over 26 billion yuan ($4 billion) in combined revenue every year.
