Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province recently rolled out a five-year action plan to promote common prosperity as part of its efforts to build itself into a modern coastal metropolis.

According to the plan, the city will strive to raise the per capita annual disposable income of local residents to more than 87,000 yuan ($12,428) and narrow the income ratio between urban and rural residents to less than 1.7 by 2026.

Efforts will be made to enhance the city's environment. For example, authorities are aiming to have the quality of all surface water under municipal control meet Grade III or above and increase the proportion of days with good air quality in a year to 93 percent by 2026.

The city will also make concerted efforts to promote reading among its residents, according to the plan.

In June 2021, the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, China's Cabinet, unveiled a guideline to turn Zhejiang into a demonstration zone for common prosperity. According to the guideline, the province will achieve this goal and see its per capita GDP and the incomes of urban and rural residents reach the standards of developed countries by 2035.
