National beach volleyball tournament kicks off in Xiangshan

The 2023 National Beach Volleyball Grand Slam Tournament (Ningbo Xiangshan Station), a trial event for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, kicked off in Xiangshan county, Ningbo on April 23.

The ongoing tournament is being held at the Banbianshan Beach Volleyball Center, a venue for the upcoming Asian Games, and will conclude on April 27. As one of China's highest-level beach volleyball competitions, the Xiangshan tournament has attracted 55 teams from around the country.

According to the competition's rules, teams ranking between 13th and 28th competed for four spots in the main draw during the qualification event that was held on April 23. During the main draw, 16 men's teams and 16 women's teams will compete for two gold medals.

After 21 matches on April 23, the women's teams from Hainan, Shanxi, Liaoning and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and the men's teams from Liaoning, Hainan, Jiangsu and Shanghai grabbed the spots. 

On April 24, Li Han and Hang Ting of the Zhejiang team wrapped up a 2-0 sweep against Liu Yixin and Wang Jiayi from the Liaoning team in the first match of the main draw competition.

"I'm proud to compete on behalf of Zhejiang province and I hope we do well in the tournament," said Mi Xinyu, coach of the Zhejiang women's team.
