Yiwu in East China's Zhejiang province saw a significant increase in tourist numbers and revenue during the 5-day May Day holiday, according to the municipal bureau of culture, radio, television, tourism and sports.

From April 29 to May 3, 406,700 tourists visited Yiwu, generating 5.07 million yuan ($733,400) in revenue, up 150.3 percent and 89.6 percent compared to the same period of 2022, respectively.

Yiwu, known as a commodity trading hub, is gaining popularity among tourists, according to an official from the bureau of culture, radio, television, tourism and sports.

"Local tourism, short-distance travel, and rural tourism have become new favorites among Yiwu residents, and rural tourism remains a priority," the official said.

"Family tours, driving tours, and rural tours are still the most popular forms of tourism among Yiwu residents, with many opting to visit the countryside, taste rural food, pick fruit, and stay in rural homestays," he added.
