The CMA CGM Seine, the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ship, completed its operations at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port's Meishan Port Area on April 27.
The 399-meter-long vessel, with a maximum capacity of 23,876 twenty-feet equivalent units (TEUs) and 220,000 metric tons, highlights the port's strategic importance as the world's leading maritime hub.
Equipped with an 18,600-cubic-meter MARK III LNG fuel tank, the ship is capable of sailing over 19,500 nautical miles. Compared to conventional fuel-powered ships, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent, nitrogen oxides by 85 percent, and nearly eliminates particulate matter and sulfur oxides.
Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has been the number one port by cargo throughput for the last 16 years. With over 200 large deep-water berths spread across 220 kilometers of coastline, it regularly handles ultra-large vessels. The port has in recent years adapted to trends favoring larger, greener ships, enhancing its capacity as a domestic and international logistics hub.
Currently, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port operates over 300 container shipping routes connecting 600 ports worldwide.
The Meishan Port Area, known for its ability to handle multiple 200,000-ton container ships simultaneously, has become frequented by massive container ships. In the first quarter of 2025, it received 98 such vessels, a 32.4 percent year-on-year increase, solidifying its global prominence.
