East China's Zhejiang province saw a surge in travel this May Day holiday, according to official data from the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism on May 5.

The province hosted over 31.1 million visitors between April 30 and May 5, a 13.7 percent increase compared to last year.

Overnight stays reached 18.3 million, up 10.5 percent year-on-year. Total tourism revenue hit 39.54 billion yuan ($5.48 billion), marking a 17 percent jump. Average spending per visitor rose modestly to 1,270 yuan.

Kicking off early, Zhejiang launched a province-wide cultural tourism week on April 28.

Over 2,400 events — ranging from open-air markets and live shows to heritage crafts and sports competitions — were held during the break. Tourists also benefited from 340 targeted discount programs.
