The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) has launched its first representative office in China, choosing Ningbo as the starting point for engaging with the country's rapidly growing marine economy.
Founded in 1889, IMarEST is a leading international professional body in marine engineering and science, with over 20,000 members worldwide. It is accredited by the UK Engineering Council and Science Council to award top-level professional qualifications, including Chartered Engineer status.
IMarEST closely collaborates with global organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In China, it has granted course accreditation to 11 leading maritime universities.
The Ningbo office aims to address major challenges in China's marine sector, including talent shortages, technological transformation, and the complexities of global marine governance.
Following the opening, an international symposium on future marine talent and sustainable port development was held at Ningbo University. Experts from academia, industry, government, and international institutions discussed strategies to drive innovation and sustainability in the marine and shipping sectors.
The event launched a joint initiative to promote smart and green development of marine talent. The initiative encourages collaborative talent training, platform building, and sustainable industry practices.
