Huanglong Island is mentioned in Song Dynasty (960-1279) records, although its exact location was not widely known at the time. In the mid-Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), large-scale migration from cities like Ningbo, Quzhou, and Taizhou led to the settlement of many people on the island. These settlers brought with them cultural traditions from their places of origin, including the distinctive stone houses.

The stone houses of Huanglong Island, built with local yellow-brown stone, are a symbol of its fishing heritage. The island is home to four fishing villages, each with its own unique style of stone houses.

In addition to its stone houses, Huanglong Island offers stunning landscapes, such as the Yuanbao Mountain and Chibo Mountain scenic areas. Guesthouses are another highlight. For example, the Lost Villa Guesthouse, perched on the coast, features a simple white exterior that contrasts with the rough stone, with 28 rooms spread across the cliffs, each offering a private view of the ocean.
