Promoting public awareness of rare bird conservation
Cui Wei, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and president of the Hangzhou Opera and Dance Drama Theater, has been focusing on improving mechanisms for rare bird conservation and public participation.
Cui believes many policy insights come from everyday life. While serving as deputy chief director of the opening ceremony of the Asian Games Hangzhou in 2023, she noticed strong public enthusiasm for fitness activities during rehearsals and later shared views on advancing high-quality public fitness services.
Her recent focus on rare bird protection also grew out of daily observation. Cui noticed that mandarin ducks, once winter migratory birds in the West Lake area, have increasingly become resident birds.
Curious about the change, she visited Professor Ding Ping at Zhejiang University and learned that rare bird species are widely regarded as an important indicator of ecosystem health and a reflection of a region's ecological governance and sustainability.
During her visit to Beijing, Cui has been paying particular attention to strengthening public communication alongside conservation efforts. She said relevant authorities could further improve public outreach on rare bird protection, helping raise awareness of ecological conservation and encouraging broader participation in protecting biodiversity.
