Zhejiang deputies to the 14th National People's Congress have been discussing how to further strengthen the global reach of Chinese culture, as creative industries from Zhejiang gain increasing international attention.

Recently, Hangzhou-based Game Science released a six-minute Chinese New Year short film titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui on social media. The video blends elements from the studio's game universe with traditional Chinese culture and quickly attracted widespread attention both in China and overseas.

Deputies said the strong response reflects the growing momentum of Chinese cultural products expanding abroad, with Zhejiang emerging as an active player in this trend.

Mai Jia, a deputy to the National People's Congress and vice-chairman of the China Writers Association, said Chinese literature and arts have long faced challenges reaching global audiences due to cultural and language barriers. In recent years, however, the global reach of Chinese culture has been expanding, bringing greater confidence to the sector.

Mai said Zhejiang moved early in promoting cultural products overseas and has achieved notable progress. At the same time, he said that the sector is still at an early stage and has yet to produce enough works that sit at the top of the cultural industry pyramid in terms of both influence and market success.

He added that while cultural content may differ across societies, artistic expression often follows universal principles. Narrative techniques such as building dramatic tension or vividly portraying everyday life can resonate with audiences worldwide.
