Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province is advancing infrastructure upgrades and island-specific industries to support common prosperity across its island communities, with a growing number of small islands developing distinctive economic identities.
In Putuo district, the main structure of Baisha Bridge connecting Baisha and Chaishan islands was completed in May. This 225-meter cross-sea bridge is expected to open in July and will improve transport and public services between the two islands.
This connection will support coordinated tourism development, with Baisha positioned as a "romantic island" and Chaishan focusing on public welfare and art-related projects. Chaishan has also upgraded its ferry terminal, elderly care center, and water supply system in recent years.
In Shengsi county's Gouqi township, fishermen are entering the peak mussel farming season. The township has expanded its marine industry through projects such as a shellfish industrial park and an agricultural service center. Last year, local mussel production reached 179,100 metric tons, generating an output value of 939 million yuan ($138 million) and supporting more than 1,000 workers.
Other islands across Zhoushan have also developed specialized tourism and cultural brands, including Huaniao Island for romantic tourism and Dongju Island for camping activities.
Since 2022, Zhoushan has launched 231 projects across 18 selected islands. Qualified drinking water, waste treatment, and 5G now reach all these islands, while tourism businesses and startup projects continue to expand steadily.
