A "shared teacher" program launched in Longyou county, Quzhou, Zhejiang province, has helped improve rural education by enabling teachers to work in various schools while keeping their original positions, two years after its implementation.
Under the program introduced in 2024, teachers from urban schools travel to rural campuses to provide lessons in areas such as sports, arts, science, and information technology.
At Beichen Primary School in Xiaonanhai town, a sports teacher from a county-level school now teaches football five times a week, helping students improve their skills. The school's team reached the top four in a county competition, with two students selected for county-level training.
At Mohuan Junior High School in Mohuan township, a science teacher from Huamao Junior High School in the downtown Longyou county helped raise students' average science score by nearly 20 points over two years.
At Xiaku Primary School in Huzhen town, an information technology teacher from a county-level school has introduced programming and artificial intelligence courses, with 10 students earning Scratch certifications.
A total of 229 teachers in Longyou have now joined the program. The county provides teaching-hour subsidies and transportation allowances, while recognizing rural teaching experience in professional evaluations.
The program aims to promote a more balanced distribution of educational resources between urban and rural areas.
