A new citywide reading project is bringing books on Ningbo's history, culture and heritage into everyday public spaces, making it easier to learn about the city through reading.

The Ningbo Bookshelf project was launched on July 26 at Ningbo Book City. Over time, compact reading corners will be introduced across libraries, community venues and other public spaces, creating a network of easily accessible collections focused on the city.

Rather than functioning as traditional book displays, the bookshelves are designed as neighborhood cultural hubs, offering readers an entry point into Ningbo's past and present. The collections include publications on local history, literature, folk traditions and cultural heritage, with titles selected according to the needs of each location.

The initiative was launched by Ningbo Publishing House and Ningbo Xinhua Bookstore Group during the 2026 National Book Expo, which was hosted in Zhejiang province from July 24 to 27, with Ningbo serving as one of the event's sub-venues.

Organizers also plan to expand the project beyond reading through a series of lectures, cultural talks and public engagement activities. The aim is to encourage more interaction with local culture while strengthening community participation.

The project already has a presence in Zhenhai and Yinzhou districts, where dedicated reading spaces have begun hosting related events. Additional bookshelves are expected to be introduced across the city, extending access to books and cultural resources in neighborhoods throughout Ningbo.
