Six competitors from Zhejiang are competing in five skills at the 48th WorldSkills Competition, which opened in Shanghai on Sept 22.
Yao Wangze of Zhejiang Construction Technician College served as flag bearer for the Chinese delegation, carrying the national flag as he led the delegation into the opening ceremony.
Yao is competing in Concrete Construction Work with teammate Zhang Junhao. The two-person skill requires competitors to interpret drawings, take measurements, make and install formwork, tie reinforcement, pour concrete, and finish surfaces within a set time.
Yao said teamwork was crucial. He tends to work quickly and find ways to save time, while Zhang takes a steadier approach and considers risks before acting. During training, they worked to keep errors within 1 millimeter and reviewed each day's work to improve speed and precision.
Yao said modern construction was a highly skilled trade requiring precision, craftsmanship, and strict standards.
Zhejiang has participated in seven consecutive editions of the WorldSkills Competition, winning nine gold medals, three silvers, one bronze, and eight Medallions for Excellence.
The other Zhejiang competitors are Fu Yuhao in Wall and Floor Tiling, Duan Libo in Car Painting, Zeng Chen in Unmanned Aerial Systems, and Zhou Le in Heavy Vehicle Technology.
