Shaoxing Second Hospital has launched a series of senior-friendly services — from a smart anti-wandering system and fruit-themed wards to a 6:30 am service window — to make medical care more convenient and accessible for elderly patients.
In the geriatric ward, an 82-year-old patient wears a smartwatch that alerts the nurses' station if he leaves the designated safe area. The new smart anti-wandering system combines Internet of Things positioning, smart sensors, and real-time alerts to create an electronic fence around the ward. A nursing department official said the system helps fill gaps in manual patrols and eases pressure on staff.
At the Geriatrics Department of the hospital's Lanting branch, colorful fruit stickers — apples, oranges, and lychees — have replaced room numbers, helping elderly patients with memory decline identify their rooms more easily.
In summer, the hospital opens its "6:30 window," making registration, payment, laboratory, and pharmacy counters available an hour early to help seniors avoid the heat. Since a pilot launch in August 2024, it has served nearly 20,000 elderly patients.
