TCM International Standardization Meetings and Press Conference of Publication of "ISO 7450:2023 Traditional Chinese Medicine - Pinellia ternata tuber" was held in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, on Nov 2.

At the meeting, ISO officially released "ISO 7450:2023 Traditional Chinese Medicine - Pinellia ternata tuber". This is the 100th international standard for TCM published by ISO/TC 249, and is also the first in Shaoxing.

Pinellia ternata is a traditional Chinese medicine commonly used in clinical practice, and it is also a variety of TCM bulk trade with important economic value. In the past 10 years, the international trade of pinellia is mainly export, with a total volume of 15,642.06 tons and $228.88 million.

"TCM is the crystal of the wisdom of the Chinese nation. In order to develop TCM through inheritance and innovation and spread it abroad, we must explore the way of its standardization," said Wu Haiming, Party secretary and president of Zhejiang Zhenyuan Share Co Ltd, a listed pharmaceutical enterprise.

Presently, the international standard of TCM is becoming a landmark project of "Chinese standards going out". As of October, ISO/TC 249 has officially published 100 international standards for TCM, and another 30 are underway.

Shen Yuandong, chairman of ISO/TC 249, said, "The press conference not only makes pinellia a stepping stone to overseas markets, but also shows the huge potential and competitiveness of TCM to China and abroad."

Shaoxing is the birthplace of "Yue doctors", with profound TCM culture and abundant TCM resources. In recent years, Shaoxing has further promoted the standardization of TCM. It has completed the filing and publicity of 39 provincial standards for TCM formula granules, and the formulation of 153 standards for refined decoction pieces. The amount ranks first among all cities in Zhejiang province.
