Fruit-themed wards bring warmth to elderly care at Shaoxing hospital
The Geriatrics Department of the Lanting Branch of Shaoxing Second Hospital welcomes visitors not with cold, impersonal door numbers, but with vibrant, auspicious fruit stickers labeled "Apple," "Orange," "Lychee," and more. These cheerful labels are part of the department's specially designed "fruit wards", created to provide a warmer, more welcoming environment for elderly patients.
The department primarily cares for older adults, many of whom experience challenges with memory, cognition, or eyesight. Forgetting room numbers or struggling to find their beds was common. To address this, the medical team introduced the "fruit wards" as an innovative solution. They replaced traditional numbered signs with brightly colored, easy-to-recognize fruit labels, accompanied by a simple graphical guide on each door, helping patients identify their rooms effortlessly.
Complementing this initiative, the department has also installed a multi-sensory touch wall. This tactile experience is designed to alleviate stress and soothe the minds of elderly patients. The wall not only encourages social interaction among patients, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness, but also serves as a warm bridge for communication between patients and healthcare staff.
Looking ahead, the hospital plans to continue developing and implementing more measures tailored to the needs of its elderly patients, safeguarding their health through both professional expertise and compassionate care.
