Zhejiang establishes 'AI + new materials' industry alliance
The integration of Zhejiang's trillion-yuan new materials industry with the artificial intelligence (AI) sector is set to unlock vast potential. The "AI + New Materials" Industry Alliance was officially launched in Zhejiang province on March 24.
AI is a driving force in the ongoing technological revolution and industrial transformation, while new materials are a key emerging sector supported by China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30). Zhejiang boasts distinct advantages in fostering the deep integration of AI and new materials.
Zhejiang has already laid a strong foundation in the new materials industry. By 2025, this provincial sector is projected to achieve over 1.19 trillion yuan ($172.32 billion) in revenue, ranking fourth nationwide.
It has established notable strengths in areas such as specialty chemical materials, magnetic materials, and fluor and silicone materials. Zhejiang also excels in AI innovation. With a concentration of leading AI models, such as DeepSeek and Qwen, Zhejiang has cultivated a robust industrial ecosystem characterized by cutting-edge foundational models, a cluster of leading enterprises, and diverse application scenarios.
Promoting the convergence of AI and new materials is not only a key initiative for Zhejiang to contribute to national strategies but also serves as a vital step toward securing its position at the forefront of future and emerging industries.
The newly formed alliance has set clear development goals: within three years, it aims to establish a provincial-level materials database, develop at least three AI-driven and material-design models, and support no fewer than 20 critical research and technology transformation projects. These efforts will provide a solid foundation for Zhejiang to build a globally advanced manufacturing hub.
